The ECS Center for Community College Policy conducted a survey on the role of community colleges in teacher education in fall, 2003. The survey of state community college leaders collected information on the nature and extent of community college involvement in the recruitment, education, and/or professional development of K-12 teachers and the use of technology. The following maps provide a state overview of the survey responses pertaining to paraprofessionals.

Number of Instructional Aides, 1970-2000:
This chart shows the change in the number of instructional aides, the change in instructional aides as a percentage of all school staff, and the change in ratio of teachers to instructional aides for the years 1970-2000. It demonstrates how the number of instructional aides has increased over these four decades and how the ratio of teachers to instructional aides has decreased.

Elementary and Secondary Teachers and Instructional Aides by State, Fall 2000:
This chart shows the number of total staff, the number of teachers, and the number of instrutional aides by state for Fall of 2000. In addition, the chart shows the teachers as a percentage of total staff, and instructional aides as percentage of total staff for each state. It is a good compa rison tool of teachers and instructional aides across the states in one school year.
