Chart 1: "Teaching Licenses Granted in U.S. by Category"
This chart shows the percentage of teaching licenses granted in the U.S. through different teacher preparation routes. The majority of teaching licenses are granted to candidates who completed a traditional teacher preparation program, but 21% of licenses granted are emergency certification licenses.

Chart 2: "Where Alternative Certification Route Participants Teach"
This chart shows, for selected states, where those teachers who completed alternative certification routes teach after they receive their teacher certification. Many of the teachers teach in hard-to-staff areas such as inner city and rural schools.

Chart 3: "Age of Alternative Teacher Certification Candidates"
This chart shows the age of alternative teacher certification candidates for selected states. While many of the candidates are in the traditional age group of 18-24 years old, many of the candidates are older, with several states having a significant number in their prog rams over 30 years of age.

Chart 4: "Gender of Alternative Teacher Certification Candidates"
This chart shows the gender of alternative teacher certification candidates for selected states. While the majority of candidates are female, some states have attracted equal numbers of male candidates, and other states have attracted more male than female candidates.

Chart 5: "Race/Ethnicity of Alternative Teacher Certification Candidates"
This chart shows the ethnicity of alternative teacher certification candidates for selected states. While the majority of candidates are white, several of the states have large percentages of black and Hispanic candidates.
