Transfer By Type of Institution Charts

Chart 1: "First-time Transfers by End of Year 1 through 5 and Type of Institution"
This chart shows the percentage of students transf erring for the first time by year in school and type of institutions. Most students transfer within three years of beginning school across all types of institutions.

Chart 2: "Transfers Between Public and Private Institutions"
This chart shows the percentage of students transferring from public to public institutions, from public to private institutions, from private to private institutions, and from private to public institution by year of transfer. Students transferring from a private to a public institution or a public to a private institution are likely to transfer in the first two years of school. Students transferring between public institutions are more likely to transfer in the first three years of school.

Chart 3: "Direction of First Transfer"
This chart shows the percentage of transfers that were upward transfers (from a 2-year to a 4-year institution); the percentage of lateral transfers (from a 2-year to a 2-year institution, or a 4-year to a 4-year institution); and the percentage of downward transfers (from a 4-year to a 2-year institution). Downward transfers and lateral transfers were more likely to happen by the end of the first year of school, while upward transfers were more evenly spread over the first three years of school.

Chart 4: "Transfer by Level of First Institution Attended to Type of Institution of First Transfer"
This chart shows the transfer rates of institutions that are 4-year institutions, 2-year institutions, and less than 2-year institutions (for example, private trade schools offering certificate programs). The less than 2-year institutions have the lowest transfer rates, and the 2-year institutions have the high est transfer rates.

This chart shows the percentage of students transferring between different types of institutions and the percentage of students who never transfer. Private institutions have lower transfer rates than public institutions. Two-year public institutions have the greatest percentage of students who transfer to another institution.
