June 27 - 29, 2004
Denver, CO
City Center Marriott
Contact: Marga Torrence

Through a U.S. Department of Education Grant, Preparing Tomorrow’s Teachers to Use Technology (PT3), The ECS Center for Community College Policy is involved in a project to explore the role of community colleges in teacher preparation. As the culminating event of the project, ECS is hosting national and state policymakers and educators to attend a National Policy Summit on June 27-29, 2004 at the Denver Marriott City Center in Denver, Colorado. This unique, two-day event will engage key decision-makers from select states in a stimulating dialogue about the policies, partnerships, promising practices and problems associated with the participation of community colleges in teacher preparation. Attendees will learn of exemplary policies, how they developed and pointers for developing their own state context-appropriate policies.

Focus Sessions include:

  • Steps in Building a Statewide A.A.T.
  • 2+2 Partnerships That Really Work!
  • The Paraprofessional Challenge: The Testing and Certification of Paraprofessionals Under NCLB.
  • The Paraprofessional Career Ladder to Teacher Certification.
  • Alternative Teacher Certification Texas Style.
  • Using Technology to Train Teachers: The Rio Salado Model.
  • An Alternative Baccalaureate Completion Model: The University Center at the Community College.
  • The Community College Baccalaureate in Education.

ECS is inviting each state to send a team of two to three delegates to attend the meeting. In consideration of competing demands on everyone’s time and budgets, ECS will provide 15 qualifying states with travel expenses up to $2,000 to attend the meeting. To be considered for the travel stipend, a two-page letter of application should be submitted by 5:00 p.m. Mountain Time, Friday, May 7, 2004. Stipend recipients will be notified by May 14, 2004. Letters should be mailed to
